Abstract
Both the anonymity of much nineteenth-century journalism and the state of the archive make it difficult to discover either the work or the income of women who supported themselves with free-lance paragraphs and newspaper columns on fashion, society, and other “women’s topics.” A search for information about one such writer reveals the nature of these difficulties, some of the improvements offered by electronic resources, and the value, sometimes, of locating commentary about changing social customs in the precisely dated pages of periodical resources.
